Schools, landlords, and employers around St. Louis County sometimes hand people a form labeled “affidavit” and say it needs to be notarized. You do not need a lecture on affidavit law. You need a clear line between their form and our job.

Under Missouri law, a notary who is not an attorney shall not assist another person in drafting, completing, selecting, or understanding a document or transaction requiring a notarial act (RSMo 486.675). We will not tell you which form to use, how to fill it out, or whether you “need” a particular paper. For those questions, talk to a licensed Missouri attorney or the agency that issued the form. Their form, their rules
The school, landlord, or employer decides what the form says and whether they will accept it. We do not rewrite it, pick a different template, or tell you if the wording is “good enough.” If blanks ask for legal choices, finish those with the issuer or an attorney first.
Our job at the appointment
If the paper already calls for a notarial act, and you appear with acceptable ID, we can complete that notarial act. Missouri non-attorney notaries must not help you draft, complete, select, or understand the document (RSMo 486.675).
Common friction points
- Form has no notarial certificate and nobody told you which one to use
- Name on the form does not match the ID
- A second signer is required but not available
- Someone wants the notary to explain what the affidavit means
Any of those mean pause and call the office that gave you the form, or a lawyer. We will not invent the missing piece.
