Under Missouri law, a notary who is not an attorney shall not assist another person in drafting, completing, selecting, or understanding a document or transaction requiring a notarial act (RSMo 486.675). We will not tell you which form to use, how to fill it out, or whether you “need” a particular paper. For those questions, talk to a licensed Missouri attorney or the agency that issued the form. What this is for
Use this when you are buying or selling a vehicle between private parties in Missouri and someone said “get it notarized.” Official DOR selling-a-vehicle guidance: assignment signatures on the title do not need to be notarized. A notarized Lien Release (Form 4809) may be required if a lien is on the title. Always confirm current steps at dor.mo.gov or your license office. What to bring
- Whatever pages actually need a notarial act (for example a lien release if that applies), already prepared
- Photo ID for each signer
- The people named on those pages
Do not expect the notary to process the title or tell you how to fill the assignment on the back of the title. That is DOR / license-office territory.
What we can and cannot do
We can: notarize documents that lawfully call for a notarial act when the signer appears with ID (such as a lien release that requires notarization).
We cannot: transfer title, collect tax, invent bill-of-sale wording, or advise whether your sale is complete. We also cannot notarize a signature that Missouri DOR says does not need a notary just because someone prefers a stamp.
Steps
- Read the current Missouri DOR “Selling a Vehicle” instructions and your license office’s checklist.
- Separate title-assignment steps (usually no notary) from any form that truly needs notarization.
- If a notarized page is required, text or call for a time with that page ready and all signers present.
- Take the finished packet to the license office / DOR process as they direct.
